Planned improvement works will begin later this year at Bewl Water to ensure a safe and sustainable long-term future for this vital reservoir.
Southern Water plans to begin construction in autumn, with the works taking place at the northern end of the reservoir, on the engineered section of the dam wall, helping to maintain safety and future-proof the site against effects of climate change.
The project will improve Southern Water’s ability to reduce the water level when needed in the unlikely event of an emergency, thanks to a new siphon draw-down system located at the existing dam.
The works are planned to meet guidance from the Environment Agency.
The reservoir is the largest stretch of open water in the South East, and is a popular attraction for water sports and other leisure pursuits.
Toby Willison, Southern Water’s Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer, said: “I am delighted that plans are progressing, and works should get underway later this year. Bewl is a vital water resource for our region and must be protected and improved.
“We continue to work closely with Bewl Water to take every effort to minimise the impact on those businesses, clubs, organisations and members of the public who utilise Bewl’s fantastic leisure facilities.”
Although subject to confirmation, works are expected to start this autumn, after the school holidays to minimise disruption, with planned completion during Spring 2024. The total cost will be £16.5 million.
