Despite our very high standards of drinking water quality sometimes it can become discoloured commonly caused by iron oxide which collects on the inside of iron water mains and your service pipes.
If there is a sudden change in direction or flow rate within the pipe, the deposits can be disturbed and re-suspended into the water. The discolouration can range from straw colour to dark drown.
What you can do
Discoloured water can often be cleared by allowing the first incoming cold water tap (usually in the kitchen) to run until it clears, some discolouration can clear quickly (within minutes) but it can take longer depending on the cause. It can take up to 24 hours after an incident for water to fully clear.
